Avocado
The Big Island produces 95% of the state's avocado. There are 300 acres devoted to avocado production, located mainly on the Kona coast - particularly at Honalo and Honaunau. There are 60 major avocado growers producing almost one half million pounds of avocado per year. Many varieties of avocados are grown on the island and the Sharwil variety is the choice among many farmers. Avocado production is year-round with a peak from March to June. Over 90% of the avocados produced on the island are marketed in Honolulu, with 85% going to supermarkets and the rest to food service. Avocado is rich in potassium, phosphorous, protein, vitamin A and niacin. Sharwil avocado is oval, with rough green skin, small seed, greenish yellow flesh and a rich, nutty flavor. Ripe avocados keep well in cold storage.
